Support Us As a funder Support us as a funder Charitable trusts and foundations support a wide range of National Youth Choir programmes; from regional singing workshops, to commissioning new choral music, and discounts on membership fees for low-income families. The support of charitable trusts and foundations is key to providing educational and performance opportunities to young singers across the UK – enabling young people from diverse backgrounds to develop their potential and aspirations. Founded in 1983, the National Youth Choir exists to enable young people across the UK to take part in transformational choral singing. Across all our programmes, our participants explore a diverse range of music, enjoy singing together, and share their creativity. We champion the power of singing and create accessible opportunities so more young people from all backgrounds can find and use their voice. Our educational programmes See more SING! SING! is our regional singing programme which enables over 500 young people each year to take part in free singing workshops. It engages state-educated children aged 9 to 15 from a diverse range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds who would otherwise miss out on the opportunity to take their passion for singing to a regional level. All participants can take part in a supported audition to join our national choirs at the end of each year. Find out more Free auditions Free auditions take place online each year, meaning that anyone can try out for their national youth choir. Those aged 9 to 25 who are new to our choirs can register online in the autumn and their audition takes place over video call. Those moving up from the 9-15 age group to the 15-18 age group also register online and typically submit a video recording. We also offer free auditions in targeted regions, including regions where we deliver the SING! programme. Thanks to the support of charitable trusts and foundations, over 700 young people took part in a free audition in 2025. Financial Assistance Financial Assistance means that young people from low-income families who successfully audition for our national choirs receive a discount on their course fees. Families, or young people who are financially independent of their parents, can apply for a discount at the point of confirming their membership. These are offered in increments of 10% according to their household income, up to 100% (free place) for those in most need of support. Thanks to our supporters, we provided discounts to over 200 young people in 2025. Around 20% of national choir members receive financial assistance each year. Our choirs See more For singers aged 18-25 National Youth Choir (18-25 Years) is our flagship choir for 100 of the most talented young singers in the UK. Membership of the choir offers unrivalled performance opportunities as well as concert tours and recording projects. Thanks to our supporters, each young person’s annual fee is subsidised by an average of £370 before any Financial Assistance is applied. Learn more Our choral development programmes See more National Youth Voices is our chamber choir for some of the most talented young singers in the UK. The choir consists of recent members of our 18-25 Years choir and Emerging Professional Artist programmes with exceptional vocal skills and performance experience. National Youth Voices appears alongside the BBC Singers as part of our ongoing partnership, and also performs at other high-profile concert engagements during the year. Emerging Professional Artists is our year-long development programme for Choral Leaders and Composers in the early stages of their professional careers. It offers routes into the UK choral sector for eight artists annually. Choral Leaders develop their conducting and leadership skills through individual mentoring, masterclasses, and gain hands-on experience delivering singing workshops. Composers develop their skills in writing for voices through individual mentorship, masterclasses, and writing for our choirs. Their new works are recorded in partnership with NMC Recordings, and each receives its world premiere at our annual music industry event. Commissioning new choral music is a key part of our work. Each year we commission three professional composers and four emerging composers to write for our choirs. As well as providing enjoyable and challenging music for our young singers, this helps address the lack of choral music available for young voices and adds to development of the choral sector as a whole. Each work is also recorded by our choirs and released on our digital record label, National Youth Choir Recordings, ensuring a legacy and worldwide exposure for the new works. Recordings are central to our creative offering and help boost our choirs’ profile around the world. Every recording is produced to professional standards and fully licensed for distribution. The label has now been running for 10 years and annually attracts over 500,000 unique listeners and 2,000,000 streams. Impact of Trust & Foundation support A SING! participant who went on to successfully audition for the national choirs and receive financial assistance explains the impact of taking part: I have learnt a lot of music theory at National Youth Choir which I miss out on at school as they do not offer a music GCSE. As someone who loves music but does not have many opportunities at school, I have tried to soak up as much as I can during my time with National Youth Choir and I am extremely grateful that I could take part. Participants tell us that being part of our choirs helps them build social connections, a sense of belonging, and create lifelong memories: National Youth Choir has made such a difference to me. It has given me so many opportunities, from Avatar Live to performing with the BBC Singers, on top of the [South Africa] tour. I’ve loved my time in the choir and so grateful for all the friendships, experiences and opportunities. Former choir participants and Emerging Professional Artists have gone on to have successful careers performing with the BBC Singers, The Tallis Scholars, Tenebrae, Voces8, The Sixteen, Gabrieli Consort, Marian Consort, Britten Sinfonia Voices, Philharmonia Voices, and St Martins Voices, as well as leading community and youth choirs across the UK.
